Description
The dry dock at Penzance Shipyard was built in 1900 by Holmans. It is constructed from rock-faced dressed granite and has a rectangular shape with a tapered inner southeast end. The dock was excavated from bedrock, which is partly visible. The sides feature battered and stepped revetments made of large rock-faced granite blocks, with integral stone steps on either side at the mouth of the dock, located at the northwest end. The lock gates have been replaced in the 20th century, and there is a later iron bridge across the southeast end for access to the shipyard. This dry dock is a notable example of a commercial dry dock from around 1900 and is part of a remarkably complete group of harbour structures at Penzance.
