Description

A stores and workshops complex dating back to 1782 (with later alterations), originally part of the HM Naval Base. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring ashlar dressings and flat arches made of gauged bright-red brick over the openings. It has hipped slate roofs.

The building comprises two parallel ranges connected by an intermediate courtyard, which was later roofed over and enclosed, creating a single, large block. The exterior is three storeys high, with 17 bays running the length and 10 bays across. Architectural details include an ashlar plinth, a plat band on the first floor, and a stepped, dentilled brick string course above the first and second floors, topped by a parapet with flat coping. The tall windows have 18-pane sashes and stone sills. Panelled and board doors are present.

The north elevation has three central bays projecting, and three bays on the right-hand side recessed on the ground and first floors, with the second floor aligned across the entire elevation, indicating a later construction. The ground floor has seven round-arched openings with ashlar imposts and keystones, containing either a 12-pane sash window or an entrance. The west elevation is arranged in sections of 4:3:3 bays, with the end sections projecting, and includes inserted entrances and a central four-panel door with a small-pane overlight. The south elevation has a layout of 2:5:3:5:2 bays, with projecting ends and a central section, and includes inserted segmental-arched entrances and original flat-arched entrances. The east elevation is arranged in sections of 3:3:3 bays, with projecting ends, and original cambered-arched entries. Two original rainwater heads are present on the south elevation, one embossed with "GR 1787", along with parts of the lead downpipes.

The interior features chamfered square wooden columns supporting large, chamfered cross-beams. A stairwell with widely-spaced plain cast-iron balusters, decorative columnar cast-iron newels, and a ramped wooden handrail is located in the northwest corner of the north range. A simpler stairwell is at the east end. Originally, these blocks were part of a planned group designed to rationalise dockyard workshop activities in a formal arrangement of self-contained buildings.
