Description
Sterling House is an 18th-century house located on North Street in Marazion. The front is finished in stucco, and it features a steep roof made of scantle slate, with brick chimneys at the left gable end and over the party wall on the right. Above the original roof, there is a mid-19th-century penthouse with a hipped roof, which is weatherboarded and has two 12-pane hornless sash windows. The house has cast-iron ogee gutters.
The building has a double depth plan, with a large reception room on the front right and an entrance/stair hall on the left. At the back, there is a deep 18th-century two-storey wing that runs at right angles to the main structure. The exterior is three storeys high and has a slightly asymmetrical south front with three windows. It features a stucco plinth, quoin strips, and ramped-headed architraves, along with a modillioned cornice.
The doorway on the left has a stuccoed doorcase with an entablature supported by moulded consoles. The entrance includes a panelled and glazed door with an overlight and sidelights. The windows are mostly late 19th-century horned sashes. The rear of the house has seen little alteration. The interior has not been inspected.
