Description

The tombchest of Walter Holkyn, located 10 metres to the northwest of the west tower of the Church of St Martin, dates from 1711 and commemorates Walter Holkyn, a yeoman who died that same year. It is constructed from stone rubble and is partly collapsed. The rectangular slate lid features both upper and lower case lettering with serifs and script. Surrounding the central panel is a marginal inscription accompanied by an intricately carved band in shallow relief. Although the lid has broken into two pieces, it remains complete.
