Description

Illogan Highway Methodist Church is an early 20th-century Methodist church built with snecked killas and granite ashlar quoins and dressings, while the sides and rear are rendered, likely on rubble. It features a slate roof and has a rectangular plan with three by five bays, presenting a gable to the road. The two-storey facade is designed in a free Gothic or Arts and Crafts style, resembling its 1839 predecessor to the left. The facade has a wide projected center that is gabled, with the ground floor made of ashlar.

The center bay includes two doorways flanking a window with two round-headed lights, all featuring deep chamfered reveals and shouldered heads. The doorways contain panelled double doors with overlights of three round-headed lights. Above, there is a large round-headed three-light window with Perpendicular tracery, a deep chamfered reveal, and an ogival hoodmould with a trefoil crest. The gable has small coupled lancets and moulded coping with kneelers and an apex cross. The narrow side bays have shouldered single-light windows on the ground floor and quatrefoils on the first floor, with a hipped roof over them. The side walls and rear have square-headed windows, the roof is half-hipped at the rear, and there is a fleche on the ridge.

The interior has not been inspected but is understood to contain a continuous gallery, a large organ, and an elaborate pulpit. This church is the third of three successive chapels on this site, collectively illustrating the progress of Methodism.
