Description
The Cottage, also known as Barncoose Tollhouse, is a tollhouse dated 1843, though it is believed to have been re-erected on its current site in 1864. The building is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and features a slate roof with stone-coped gable ends. It has very large granite rubble lateral stacks with set-offs and square yellow clay pots. The plan is T-shaped, with an entrance porch located in the angle.
The tollhouse is a single storey. The north front includes a projecting gable-ended wing to the right, which has a 2-light granite mullion window. To the left is a gabled porch with a chamfered 4-centred arch doorway, above which is a stone tablet inscribed with the year 1843. There is a large lateral stack in the angle on the right. Both the east and west gable ends feature 2-light granite mullion window frames. At the rear (south), there is another large lateral stack and a 20th-century lean-to outshut. The interior has not been inspected. This tollhouse is noted for having been relocated to its current position to accommodate an embankment.
