Description

The Illogan Highway Methodist Church Sunday School is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in 1809, now serving as a Sunday School and meeting room. The building is constructed from slobbered killas rubble, featuring granite quoins and dressings, slate sills, and a modern pantiled roof with a brick chimney added at the north-east corner. It is a small rectangular structure oriented on an east-west axis, consisting of a single storey with four bays. The openings are very plain, with square heads and rectangular lintels. There is a doorway in the third bay on the north side, 16-pane sashed windows in the second and fourth bays, and a former window in the first bay that is now blocked by a wooden addition. On the south side, there are four windows, with the west end featuring a 16-pane sash and the others having been altered. This building is significant as the first of three successive chapels on this site, which together illustrate the development of Methodism in the area.
