Description

Helstone Methodist Church is a small Methodist chapel built as a Wesleyan Meeting House in 1826, as indicated by a datestone. The building is constructed from stone rubble with granite quoins and features a slate roof with hipped ends. It has a rectangular plan with the entrance located at the higher right-hand end. A late 20th-century porch has been added as a lean-to extension on this side.

The front elevation is symmetrical with two windows facing the road and the entrance on the right side. There is a late 20th-century lean-to extension with a slate roof and a 19th-century six-panel door leading to the original entrance. Above the entrance is a lunette tablet dated 1826. The front has two window openings with two-centred dressed stone arches, which contain late 19th-century horned sashes featuring intersecting glazing bars. The lower lights of these windows were replaced with obscured glass in the late 20th century. The rear elevation has two similar window openings with brick dressings and early 20th-century sashes with intersecting glazing bars. The lower left side wall has two two-centred arched openings for windows that also have intersecting glazing bars and crown glass.

Inside, the chapel features simple pitch pine pews and a rostrum with a moulded cornice and fluted pilasters, which have replaced the original fittings.
