Description

Altarnun Methodist Chapel is a Wesleyan chapel built in 1859, as indicated by the datestone. The chapel is constructed from snecked local slatestone with granite dressings and features a moulded plinth. The right side is slate hung with rag slates, and it has a slate roof with gable ends.

The overall plan is rectangular, with a pair of entrances located at the liturgical west end. The exterior showcases a symmetrical gabled front, where the central bay is set forward and flanked by two entrance porches, which are also slightly advanced from the main structure. The central bay features dressed granite quoins and a moulded plinth, with a string at the springing point of the 2-centred arch that leads to the three-light west window. Above this window is a datestone set in a roundel within an 8-pointed star. The entrance porches, which have lean-to roofs, are set back slightly from the central bay, and their parapet coping aligns with the moulded string of the bay. Each porch contains 19th-century panelled double doors within dressed granite 4-centred arches. The outer corners of the porches are supported by low buttresses, topped with tall elongated pinnacles. The left side of the chapel is rendered, while the right side is hung with rag slates, each side featuring three square-headed three-light windows.

Inside, the chapel contains 19th-century box pews, originally featuring a raised central pew at the west end, which has since been removed. There is a 19th-century rostrum with a shallow niche at the rear displaying the text 'Thy word is God', along with a 19th-century Gothic organ case. The roof is also from the 19th century, supported by trusses on granite corbels. A 20th-century partition has been inserted across the nave, dividing the church into two sections.
