Description

Penpont Mill is a house dating probably from the 17th century. It is built of rendered and painted stone rubble, with a rag slate roof that is half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. There are brick shafts to an axial stack to the left of the centre and to an end stack on the right. The original plan suggests a three-room layout with a cross or through passage, with the entrance situated to the right of the centre. A room on the right-hand side was originally heated by the end stack, while the room to the left of the passage was heated by an axial stack, and an inner room beyond to the left remains unheated. The exterior features an asymmetrical three-window front. A 20th-century door is located to the right of the centre, flanked by two 2-light casements. The first floor has a 19th-century 6-pane sash window and two further 19th-century 12-pane sash windows. Internally, the building was not inspected. The house is notable as the birthplace of Nevil Northey Burnard (1818-1878), a sculptor.
