Description

The Pool Methodist Church is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, dating to 1862 and enlarged in 1865, with later alterations. It is constructed of snecked killas with granite quoins and dressings, the sides and rear being of uncoursed rubble, and has a modern pantiled roof. The rectangular building is oriented on a north-south axis, originally comprising 3 bays and later expanded to 6, with a gable facing the road.

The symmetrical three-bay front facade features a wide, basket-arched doorway in the centre, with panelled doors and an overlight. Above the door is a round-headed window, and tall round-headed windows flank the doorway, all openings defined by long-and-short voussoirs and raised keystones. The gable displays a moulded roundel with the date "1862", and marks indicate that the dressings of an earlier, simpler pediment have been removed. A ridge ventilator is present on the roof. The side walls have a quoined vertical joint marking the rear of the third bay, and contain 16-pane sashed windows on both floors. Doorways are located on the east side in the fifth and sixth bays.

Inside, a horseshoe gallery is supported by iron Tuscan columns with coupled brackets and a panelled, jettied front. A basket-arched apse accommodates a choir gallery containing an organ, with a classical-style architrave, including pilasters with imposts, a moulded cornice, and a small pediment decorated with acanthus. A rostrum is supported by a low Tuscan colonnade, its deck protected by Gothic-style trefoil arcading, and is accessed by elegant, curved staircases rising from the rear.
