Put-On Stone 60 Metres To East Of Coombegate

Put-on stone is a milestone located 60 meters east of Coombegate, dating from around 1764. It is a granite rectangular post with a rounded top and features incised lettering. The inscription indicates that coaches traveling from St Ive towards Callington were permitted to take a trace horse at Coombegate to assist them on their journey. At the top of the hill directly north of Cadson, there is a Take-off stone that instructed the coachman to unhitch the trace horse and send it back. This stone is situated on a turnpike road established by an act for turnpike roads leading into Callington in 1764, which set up the Callington Turnpike Trust. A subsequent act in 1785 authorized the widening and improvement of 32 miles of road in the Callington area.
