Description
The milestone located northeast of Kingswood House on Sand Hill is an ashlar stone dating from around 1833. It features an arched top and is integrated into a wall of granite stones on the west side of the Sand Hill road. The front of the stone displays the inscription "C.5 / T.4 1/2".
This milepost was established by the Callington Turnpike Trust, which was created by an Act of Parliament in 1764. The trust's primary goal was to create a route over Hingston Downs to the West End of Tavistock New Bridge (Gunnislake) and through St Ive to Cornbrow. The road connecting Callington and Tavistock underwent improvements around 1833, where the steep inclines on the Devon side of the county boundary were modified to create a gentler gradient. While no significant changes occurred in Cornwall at that time, milestones like this one were likely produced as part of the overall enhancement of the turnpike.
The milestone is designated at Grade II for being an early 19th-century example, likely associated with the improvements to the turnpike, and it is part of a group of similar milestones along this road.
