Description

A stable, loosebox, and coach house, dating to circa 1852-1854, designed by William White for Canon Reginald Hobhouse. The building is constructed of stone rubble with reused large granite quoins, likely from an earlier rectory. The roofs are steeply pitched with gable ends, although the original scantle slates have been replaced with corrugated asbestos sheeting, except on the south slope. The arrangement is ā€˜L’ shaped, comprising a single-storey range on the left and a gabled, two-storey, shallow projecting wing on the right. A stable door provides access to the loosebox on the left, while a carriage shed in the centre features four-plank doors. A dressed stone segmental arch is visible on the right. The projecting gable end has dressed stone arches to both ground and first-floor openings. A corrugated asbestos lean-to porch is situated at the junction. A later single-storey shed projects forward from the gable end. The rear elevation has brick dressings around the openings. A cobbled courtyard sits to the front, partly covered. The building is included on the list for its group value alongside the Chantry.
