Description
The milestone at Bramble Wood is a granite structure dating from around 1764. It is a rectangular post made of ashlar stone with a rounded head. The milestone features incised lettering with serifs that indicates the distance to Callington as "C 3". There is also a painted arrow to the right of the 'C' pointing towards Callington.
This milestone is part of a series established by the Callington Turnpike Trust, which was created by an Act of Parliament in 1764. The Act outlined eight routes, including the one leading to Callington from St Germans via Clapper Bridge, which originally had three milestones.
Milestones are significant as they are among the few remaining physical markers of historic road use, showcasing the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes. This particular milestone is one of several late 18th-century granite markers erected by the Callington Turnpike Trust. It remains intact and in its original location, and it has group value with other listed mileposts along this route, as well as with the 16th-century bridge located immediately to the south.
