Description

The garden walls surrounding Newton Ferrers House date from the late 17th century and include an old entrance on the east and an arch on the west. The gatepiers, which originally formed the entrance to the house, are made of granite ashlar. Before 1950, these piers were square in shape and featured a moulded plinth with ornamented shafts topped by ionic volutes, a square abacus, curved necks, and ball finials. Each pier had two incised moulded panels with a dovetailed band and heraldic arms above; the left pier displayed the Coryton arms, while the right featured the de Ferrers arms.

The piers have since been altered and re-arranged, with the upper parts of the panels and dovetailed band now serving as capitals on the western elevation, and the heraldic shields used as capitals on the east. The original entrance has been completely blocked, and the shafts are now undecorated. A datestone marked '1695', salvaged from the west range of the house which was damaged by fire in 1940, has been reset in the stone rubble wall between the piers on the east side. The stone rubble garden wall extends to the east, north, and west of the house, enclosing a topiary garden that has been partially remodelled. On the west side, there is a segmental chamfered granite arch, which may have been reset, incorporated into the stone rubble wall. For a historical illustration of the gatepiers before the remodelling, refer to "Newton Ferrers, Cornwall, the seat of Mr Digby Collins" in Country Life, January 9, 1904.
