Description

3 and 4 Monument Road are a pair of town houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from elvan ashlar with granite dressings, which include a plinth, keyed flat arches, rusticated quoins, and sill strings. The houses feature an asbestos slate hipped roof with deep-projecting eaves and a brick stack on the right side. The buildings have a double-depth plan and rise to three storeys, presenting a symmetrical three-window front. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes, and there is a large granite lintel above a central pair of doorways, which are separated by a slender granite monolith. The left doorway has an original eight-panel door, while the right has a simpler copy. At the rear, there are original round-arched stair windows with fanlight heads. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted to have original dogleg staircases with stick balusters.
