Description
Hope Cove and the adjoining cottage to the east are located on Lansallos Street in Polperro and date from the late 17th century. The building is constructed of painted and rendered stone rubble and features a steeply pitched slate roof with gable ends. A stone rubble chimney stack with a brick shaft is positioned on the left-hand gable end. Originally, the structure likely had a two-room and cross passage plan but has since been divided into two one-room plan cottages, with a third cottage, Way-Way Cottage, extending from the front. There is also a later wing at the rear.
The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window front, with one window on either side of the projecting wing of Way-Way Cottage. On the ground floor, to the left of the projecting wing, there is a part-glazed early 20th-century door and a canted bay window without glazing bars, both sheltered by a slate hood. The first floor features a two-light casement window without glazing bars, along with a 20th-century window in a gabled half-dormer above. At the junction with the projecting wing, there is a projection that may have been for a stair or a lateral chimney stack. To the right of the projecting wing, steps lead up to the entrance of Hope Cove, which has a part-glazed door on the right-hand side and a 20th-century window in a gabled half-dormer above.
The interior is not accessible. It is reputed to be one of the oldest houses in Polperro, as noted by J. Couch in 1871.
