Milestone Approx 20M South-West Of Hay Cottage

The milestone located approximately 20 meters south-west of Hay Cottage was erected around 1762. This granite stone is roughly rectangular with chipped corners, standing about 0.45 meters high and 0.3 meters wide, and features a rounded top. There are traces of a benchmark on the top of the front face. It is set within a stone boundary wall or hedge and is painted white with black lettering that reads "VeRYaN 3 TREGONEY 1," using a mix of upper and lower case letters.

This milestone marks the first stone to the south of Tregony and is associated with the Creed, Tregony and St Just Turnpike Trust, which was enacted in 1762. It is noted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1880 and the Second Edition from 1907. The lettering may have been recarved in the 19th century.

The milestone is designated for its historic interest as a good example of a 1760s stone on an historic turnpike road and for its intactness, as it remains in its original location with preserved lettering.
