Description
No. 5 Fore Street is a town house that served as the Mayor's residence in 1832. It is connected under the same roof to Nos. 3 and 4. The building dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of stone rubble, with 20th-century cement render and asbestos slate gable roofs, along with rear stone lateral stacks, one of which is truncated below the roof covering.
Originally, the house had a two-room through passage plan with rear wings forming a U shape. It has two storeys and a four-window front. The doorway is off-centre to the left, with a large 8-pane fixed light window to the left and a 6-pane sash window to the right. The first floor features tall 16-pane and 12-pane sash windows, with the third window exhibiting heavy ovolo moulded glazing bars from the 18th century. A coin from the reign of King George was found under the window on the far right.
Inside, there is a straight flight turned baluster staircase and a two-panel door leading to the left first-floor room, framed in 17th-century oak with ovolo moulding and stepped stops. The upper floor was once used for Town Council meetings. The building has a pegged principal and collar roof.
