Description
The Old Town Hall, located at No. 57 on Fore Street in Tregony, is a house with a shop that is said to have formerly served as the Town Hall. It dates from the late 18th century and is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings, topped by a hipped Delabole slate roof. The building has a U-shaped plan with integral service wings extending at a lower level and features a stairwell situated between the wings.
It stands two storeys high with a three-bay front. The central bay projects slightly forward and is topped with a low-pitched gable adorned with later shaped barge boards. The structure includes a granite ashlar plinth and rusticated quoins. The central entrance consists of a four-panel door flanked by blocked sidelights, all set on granite sills, with inner jambs and a keyed lintel above. Above the door is a Venetian window featuring a 12-paned wooden sash with a fanlight and blocked sidelights. Each of the flanking bays contains a 19th-century wooden shop window with 20 panes, complete with a keyed granite lintel, and a tripartite first-floor window with small-paned sashes, painted wooden mullions, and lintels. The ground floor windows were likely similar in design originally. A brick chimney is located over the side wall to the right.
Inside, the building features an open tread, open well staircase with stick balusters and a ramped handrail, along with original ceiling cornices. Access to the main door is via four granite steps, which are flanked by wrought iron railings.
