Description
This milestone, located approximately 200 meters south-west of Pendower Lodge in Gerrans, dates back to 1761. It is made of granite and has a rectangular shape with a rounded top, standing about 1.2 meters tall. The stone is painted white and features black lettering on its south-facing side, which reads: ST MAWES / V / TREGONY / V.
The milestone is part of a series established by the Creed, Tregony and St Just Turnpike Trust, created by an Act of Parliament in 1761. Milestones along the road between Dennis Water and Tregony are triangular, while those between Tregony and St Mawes, including this one, are rectangular. Each rectangular milestone has a unique style of inscription, suggesting that the carvings may have been done locally.
This milestone is designated as Grade II for several reasons: it is well-preserved and remains in its original location, it reflects the significant improvements in road infrastructure during the 18th century, and it contributes to a group of surviving milestones from the same Turnpike Trust.
