Description
This milestone, located approximately 142 meters east of Beruppa Farm, was erected in 1762 by the Creed, Tregony and St Just Turnpike Trust. It is made of granite and has a rectangular shape with a semi-circular rounded head, measuring 0.74 meters high and 0.3 meters wide. The milestone is painted white with black lettering, inscribed with "St MAWeS/7/TRegONy/3."
The Creed, Tregony and St Just Turnpike Trust was established by an Act of Parliament in 1762. Due to the realignment of the A3078 in the late 20th century, the milestone now stands in a ditch a couple of meters from the current road edge. It was rediscovered in 2007 when the undergrowth on the verge was cut back.
This milestone is designated for its historical significance as one of the earliest milestones in England, erected before the 1773 Act that mandated milestones along turnpike roads. It remains intact and in its original position, serving as a reminder of the development of the turnpike system in Cornwall, which was essential for transportation in a growing industrial landscape.
