Description

Treviles Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later extensions from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed from slatestone granite, freestone, and some blocked render, topped with Delabole slate roofs. The building has a complex layout, likely starting with a north-west range, then a wing forming an L shape, followed by a range around 1700 that creates a U shape, and a later wing that encloses a courtyard. The courtyard was infilled in the late 18th century to create a central stair hall.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and features three windows on the north-west front, which has been modified in the late 18th century and rendered in the 20th century, with some slight buttressing on parts of the ground floor. A round-headed freestone doorcase with a cornice is nearly central to the façade, though the fenestration is offset towards the left. The entrance has a six-panel door with flush beaded bottom panels and a fanlight above, featuring intersecting geometric glazing bars. The windows are wooden sashes with 20 and 16 panes in their original openings, and there are modillions on the fascia. The roof is hipped, with rendered chimney stacks on the side walls.

The south-east range has four windows and a door located beneath the third window. The walling displays bands of slatestone rubble up to the impost level, granite ashlar with a flat band at the first-floor sill level, and alternating rubble and granite ashlar bands above the first-floor windows. The openings are topped with flat arches made of granite voussoirs. All windows have 20th-century iron casements, and there are modillions on the eaves fascia. Rendered chimneys rise over the gable ends, which also feature small round-headed 9-pane sashes to light the attic space.

Inside, there is a mid-18th century style chimney piece in the upper end room of the north-west range, with a geometric plaster ceiling from around 1700 above it. The entrance passage and central stair hall have an early to mid-18th century cornice, and the stair features a balustrade with Chinese influence, likely from the mid to late 18th century. The upper floors and roof have not been inspected.
