Description

Trestain Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse constructed of slatestone and cob, featuring a gable-ended roof made of corrugated asbestos, which was formerly thatched. The building has a two-room through passage plan and stands two storeys tall. The east front is irregular with three windows. A single-storey lean-to obscures the ground floor walling and there is a slight projection at the left lower end, likely the original stair turret. There are two doorways to the right of the centre, with the right doorway blocked, and a three-light casement window to the left, alongside a 20th-century casement window to the right.

On the first floor, there is a 16-pane sash window off centre, a 14-pane sash window to the right, and a two-light casement window with glazing bars to the left over the lean-to. The left gable features a massive stone chimney, while the right gable has an external stack. The west front has two windows and a blocked doorway opposite the east doorway. The lower end has a 12-pane, two-light wooden casement window, with a 4-pane, two-light wooden casement window in a greatly reduced opening above it. The upper end windows are two-light wooden casements.

Inside, there is a thick wall to the right of the entrance, likely dating from when the building was converted into two cottages, and a plank and muntin screen to the left. The staircase runs along the back wall and is accessed from the lower room. The lower end hearth is enormous but blocked, with an adjacent recess for the stair turret. Surviving features include chamfered and stopped waney oak ceiling beams and a 17th-century two-panel door with wide stiles and rails leading to the first floor.
