Description
Meaders Cottage is a farmhouse, now a cottage, dating to around the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with 19th-century brick dressings to the front, and has a rag slate roof with gable ends. Rendered shafts are visible on the gable ends. Originally, the house followed a three-room and through-passage plan, with stair turrets at the rear of the hall and lower room, likely the kitchen, which had a gable-end stack. The hall may have had an axial stack, now truncated, and the inner room has a gable-end stack. A rear outshut is located at the higher end of the house, and a porch is situated at the rear of the former passage, between the stair turrets. Around the early 19th century, the house was remodelled to create a symmetrical front, with a central entrance inserted into the original hall and passage, and the former front door converted into a window. The internal plan was probably altered at the same time. A circa 19th-century lean-to wing extends to the right of the front. The front elevation displays a regular three-window arrangement. On the ground floor, there are two four-pane sashes, each set within a brick segmental arch. A partly glazed 20th-century door is centrally positioned beneath a brick segmental arch. Upstairs, two four-pane sashes flank a narrow two-pane sash. Brick dressings are present throughout. A stone rubble lean-to, with a corrugated asbestos sloping roof, projects on the right-hand side of the front elevation. The rear elevation shows a staircase projection with a narrow, rectangular stair window and winder stairs within. The rear elevation remains largely original. The interior has not been inspected.
