Milestone Approx 36M North Of Cornelly Lodge

A granite milestone dating from the 1820s or 1830s was erected by the Creed, Tregony and St Just Turnpike Trust. The milestone is triangular in plan with a flat top and stands approximately 0.7 metres high. It is painted white with black lettering, inscribed “TRURO/7” on the south face and “TREGONY/½” on the north face. An Ordnance Survey benchmark has been carved onto the lower front of the Truro face.

Historically, roads were maintained by the parishes they passed through, but turnpike trusts were established from 1663 to levy tolls for road upkeep. The Creed, Tregony and St Just Turnpike Trust was established by an Act of Parliament in 1762, and this milestone is situated on the former turnpike road between Denas Water and Tregony; it is marked on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map. Turnpike trusts favoured milestone markers from the mid-18th century onwards. Initially, milestones had a rectangular plan with rounded heads, but triangular plan stones became popular in the 1820s and 1830s. The milestone retains its original position and has group value with other designated milestones along this turnpike route; it provides evidence of the development of the turnpike system in Cornwall and the improvement of transportation.
