Description
Castle Cottage is a small house that was formerly a prison. It likely dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the 19th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with a scantle slate roof and brick chimneys at the gable ends. It has a two-room plan, with one room at the lower end, and stands two storeys tall. The front facing the street is irregular, featuring a nearly central door leading to the older part of the house, with a narrow four-pane window to the left and a 12-pane wooden sash window with horns to the right. On the first floor, there is a two-light wooden casement window above the door and to the right. The openings are topped with cambered brick arches. The extension has a roof with eaves at a lower level and includes one modern window in the gable end, while the walls of the lower part remain unpierced.
