Description
Trenow Cottage is a house that was originally a farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century and remodelled in the mid 18th century. The front is pebbledashed, while the rest is painted rubble. The front roof is covered with grouted scantle slate, and the rear has corrugated asbestos that sweeps lower over an 18th-century outshut. There are brick chimneys at the gable ends and cast-iron ogee gutters. The building has a double depth plan with a parlour on the left and a larger hall/kitchen on the right, connected by a passage that leads to a central stair at the rear, flanked by two shallow service rooms within the outshut.
The exterior is two storeys high with a three-window south front and a doorway that is central to the symmetrical arrangement of windows, which are grouped towards the left. The door is a 20th-century ledged type, and the windows are four-pane horned sashes.
Inside, the cottage remains largely unaltered since the 18th century, featuring most of its original carpentry and joinery from that period, including two-panel doors, ovolo-moulded beams, muntin and plank partitions, and a pegged roof structure. The slate-flagged kitchen contains a large original fireplace with a chamfered and stopped oak lintel, and a large oven with a corbelled domed roof, which has been partly rebuilt at the front to create a semi-circular niche, likely in the 18th century. There is also a probably resited original late 17th-century two-panel door with wide muntins and rails leading from the right-hand chamber to the rear outshut.
