Description

Forda Cottage is a farmhouse, now a private house, dating from around the mid 17th century. It is constructed of rendered cob on stone rubble footings and features a corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends that replaced the original thatch. The building has projecting stone rubble and cob end stacks with brick shafts.

The layout consists of a two-room plan with a through passage, and the entrance is located to the right of the center. The larger hall kitchen is likely to the left, while the smaller parlour is to the right, both heated by end stacks and equipped with cloam ovens. The cottage was extended to the rear in the mid 20th century, likely on the site of earlier service rooms that may have been added in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The exterior is two storeys high with a regular three-window front and the entrance to the right of the center. It features a 19th-century plank door with a 19th-century open-fronted porch that has been enclosed in the 20th century. There are 20th-century three-light casements on either side of the entrance, as well as two two-light casements and one three-light casement on the first floor.

Inside, the right-hand room retains complete closely set waney unchamfered floor joists and a chamfered 17th-century timber lintel over the fireplace, which has tongue stops. The left-hand room has had its floor joists replaced, but the fireplace features well-constructed ashlar jambs and an unmoulded timber lintel. The roof timbers appear to be complete, although not fully inspected, with several principals showing slightly curved feet.
