Description
West Lane Farmhouse is a house dating from around the 17th century, which was extended in the 18th century or early 19th century, and again in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a rag slate roof that has a gable end on the right and a hipped end on the left. The left end features a 20th-century brick chimney, while the right end has a projecting stone rubble chimney with a brick shaft.
The farmhouse has a two-room and cross passage plan, heated by end stacks, with a smaller room on the right. The entrance is located to the right of the center, with a small window directly to the left, which may have originally lit a small larder or cold store. An outshut was added across the rear in the 18th or early 19th century, and the cottage was extended to the left in the mid-20th century, which included a small outshut and the demolition of part of the left-hand end wall of the earlier range.
The exterior is two stories high with an asymmetrical two-window front. The entrance, located to the right of center, features a circa 19th-century lean-to stone rubble porch with a 20th-century door. To the right of the entrance is a 19th or 20th-century two-light casement window, while a small square window with a single pane of glass is directly to the left, followed by another two-light casement window. On the first floor, there is a 19th or 20th-century two-light casement window on the left and an early 19th-century two-light casement on the right. The outshut on the left has 20th-century glazed doors. The rear elevation remains unspoiled, featuring a rag slate cat-slide roof.
Inside, there is a 17th-century chamfered lintel above the right-hand fireplace. The roof structure is also from the 17th century, featuring A-frames with chamfered cambered collars that are partly halved, lap-jointed, and pegged on the face of the principals.
