Description
Westdownend Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 17th century. It has been partly demolished and extended in the mid 19th century. The building is made of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with the front range featuring granite quoins. It has a rag slate roof with gable ends and rendered end stacks.
The original layout of the farmhouse is uncertain, but it may have originally had a two or three-room plan with a through or cross passage, including a two-storey porch from the 17th century. The lower left end of the house was heated by an end stack. The higher end of the house has been demolished to the right of the passage, and the entrance to the porch has been blocked. In the mid 19th century, the house was extended at the lower end, creating a two-room and cross passage plan crosswing, resulting in a roughly 'T' shaped overall plan. There is also a 19th century outshut extension at the rear of the passage of the earlier range, along with a small lean-to outshut at the rear of the right-hand room of the later range.
The exterior has two storeys and features a regular three-window front on the mid 19th century range. There is a 19th century porch near the centre made of stone rubble with brick dressings and a slate roof with gable ends. The 19th century sash windows have been replaced with 20th century PVC windows in the original openings, which have chamfered brick surrounds. On the earlier rear wing, the two-storey porch has a chamfered four-centred arch that has been partly blocked to form a window. Above this, there is a two-light cavetto moulded granite mullion window, with a similar window reset in the outshut at the rear.
Inside, the earlier range features a 19th century plastered ceiling, and the partition on the lower side of the passage has been removed.
