Description

A pair of houses dating from the 1860s, located in Marazion. They are constructed from granite ashlar to the front and rear, granite rubble elsewhere with granite dressings, and have a hipped, scantle slate roof with projecting eaves. Brick chimneys rise from the side walls and the central cross wall.

The houses were designed with a pair of identical double-depth plans. Each house features reception rooms on the ground floor, accessed by bridges leading to doorways in the north wall. There are two principal reception rooms at the rear (facing the garden) and two rooms at the front. A cross passage connects the front rooms to a stair hall, which is situated behind the smaller front room adjacent to the party wall. Kitchens and other service rooms are located on the basement floor, with cellars beneath part of the basement. Coal cellars are built into the bank of land in front of the houses.

The exterior is two stories high over a basement. The symmetrical, three-window north front features a mid-floor string course and chamfered rusticated quoins. Each front has a central doorway with an original glazed gable entrance porch and fluted pilaster corners. Original four-pane horned sash windows are present throughout. The rear, a four-window garden front, mirrors the main front’s detailing but uses narrower courses of ashlar. Small dormers are located in the middle of each side, lighting the attic, and skylights illuminate the stair halls.

The interior of Chy Morvah West House was inspected and retains a virtually complete original interior, including original carpentry, joinery and plasterwork. Features include an open-well open string staircase with a mahogany handrail, mahogany panelled doors and window shutters, and moulded plaster ceiling cornices in most rooms. The two principal reception rooms and the entrance hall boast ceiling cornices enriched with carved detail. Complete cellar fittings are also present. A cast-iron balustrade is located in front of the houses. The houses are prominently situated, offering coastal views opposite St Michael's Mount.
