Description
No. 22 Old Market Street is an office building dating from around 1890, designed in the Queen Anne style. It features a brick structure with limestone dressings, a tile-hung bay, and a gabled roof covered with pantiles. The building has three storeys and an attic, with a narrow, tall frontage capped by a coped gable.
The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front, which includes four-panel doors on either side of a wide tripartite window. The rendered side piers are topped with cartouches, and there is a bracketed cornice above. The first floor has brick piers that support moulded capitals on the second floor, which are beneath square panelled bases that lead to octagonal ball finials on either side of the attic gable.
The shallow canted bay on the first and second floors is flush with the front. It features a plate-glass tripartite window on the first floor and similar glazing with an Ipswich window on the second floor, separated by a low plaster pediment with side brackets and tile-hung backing. Above the bay, there is a two-centre moulded brick arch on curved brackets, with a tile-hung tympanum and sprocketed eaves, along with two-light casement windows. The brick gable features ashlar bands, roll-top coping, and a tall square ball finial. The interior has not been inspected, but the building is included for its group value.
