Description
The Three Horseshoes Public House is a public house located on Old Market Street in Bristol, dating from the mid-17th century. It features a combination of render and brick over a timber frame, with a brick side stack and a pantile gable roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall, with a basement and attic, presenting a one-bay range.
The gabled front is distinguished by tiled lean-to canopies that separate the storeys. The left-hand doorway includes a half-glazed door with a rectangular overlight, accompanied by a canted bay featuring plate-glass sashes, all beneath a lean-to with well-crafted, curved canopies. The first and second floors also have canopies with fretted eaves, flanking canted bays, and the attic is fitted with 20th-century glazing. The eaves and apex are adorned with deep barge-boards featuring diamond panels and turned finials.
Inside, the ground floor has a 20th-century public house interior, while a winder stair with stick balusters leads to the upper levels. The first-floor beams showcase cyma chamfer stops and ovolo mouldings in the bay frame, and the roof trusses are supported by arched collars. Notable external features include a wrought-iron public house sign on the second floor, which displays three linked horseshoes, and a Pennant-framed hatch set into the pavement to the left of the bay.
