Description

No. 68 Old Market Street is an attached house built around 1760, showcasing a mid-Georgian style. The exterior features stucco with limestone dressings, brick gable-end stacks, and a slate and pantile mansard valley roof. The building has a double-depth plan and consists of three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a three-window range.

On the left side, a rusticated pilaster rises above the cornice and parapet, leading to coped end gables. The left-hand doorcase is adorned with engaged Tuscan columns and a pediment, while a 19th-century canted bay window is positioned to the right of the two windows. The first-floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes, the second-floor windows are 3/3-pane sashes, and there are three 19th-century attic casements.

Inside, the basement is vaulted and flagged. The entrance hall is divided by a glazed screen with a rectangular overlight that features a decorative fanlight. There is a rear open-well staircase with a wreathed toadback rail, column-on-vase balusters, and column newels, along with panelled wainscot and a small winder stair leading to the attic. The panelled rooms include fireplaces with eared surrounds and panelled overmantels, as well as first-floor flanking cupboards with HL hinges and six-panel doors.
