Description

Kingsley Hall is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from 1706 and restored in the late 19th century. It features a brick-clad timber frame with limestone dressings, a brick end stack, and paired hipped pantile roofs. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the early Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with a four-window range.

The ground floor is set back beneath the overhanging upper storeys, supported by five three-quarter columns with flared capitals and cast pedestals, projecting one window's depth above the pavement. Above this, there is a moulded timber beam, with Flemish-bond brickwork incorporating yellow headers and red stretchers, rusticated quoins leading to a cornice, a first-floor drip, and a 20th-century parapet. The 19th-century shop front includes half-glazed doors with margin and overlights, along with windows featuring glazing bars. The upper windows have brick arches with keys above bolection-moulded architraves, leading to 6/6-pane horned sashes. A panel inscribed with "1706" is located in the middle below the drip.

Inside, the building has been largely remodelled in the mid-20th century, featuring a dogleg stair with quarter landings and turned balusters. Kingsley Hall is noted as the only example in Bristol of a style of urban architecture that is more commonly found in southwestern towns, such as the Butterwalks in Dartmouth and Totnes.
