Description

Number 46 is an attached house located on St Michael's Hill in Bristol, dated 1711. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with brick gable stacks and a concrete tiled roof, featuring a double-depth plan in the early Georgian style. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a four-window range. The windows are regularly spaced, and the doorway is positioned second from the right. It features rusticated pilaster strips, a plat band, a cornice that returns at the ends, and a coped parapet with rectangular panels above the windows. The doorcase is notable, with a Tuscan porch supported by columns, entablature blocks, and a wide segmental pediment. It also includes a late 18th-century rectangular batswing fanlight and a six-panel door. The windows have raised surrounds and consist of 6/6-pane sashes. There are two dormers with casement windows. The projecting basement area has a rubble front wall with a hatch on the right and steps leading down. The interior has been converted into flats, resulting in alterations and no notable features remaining. The property also includes attached front area wrought-iron railings and gates with urn finials, as well as matching window surrounds to Number 48. This is a fine example of an early Georgian house.
