Description

A pair of attached houses, built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The houses are stuccoed with limestone dressings, featuring a central chimney stack and a pantile half-hipped roof. They are designed according to an early Georgian style, with a double-depth plan, and comprise four storeys and a basement, each with a two-window front. The pair presents a symmetrical facade, topped by a deep, moulded parapet that angles downwards at the corners. The entrance to number 50 has been displaced to the left to accommodate the entrance to number 48, both featuring curved brackets and moulded canopies above six-panel doors. The windows are largely 6/6-pane sashes in exposed frames, although the top floor windows are 4/4-pane. Inside, the entrance hall has a panelled screen leading to the front room, and a central dogleg staircase with column-on-vase balusters and a moulded rail. There are 2- and 4-panel doors throughout. The houses are accompanied by attached wrought-iron area railings and gates. These may represent a late 17th century house that originally had paired gables.
