Description

Numbers 65 and 67 are a pair of attached houses located on St Michael's Hill in Bristol, dating from the early 18th century. They are rendered with limestone dressings and feature a central stack and a hipped roof covered with pantiles. The houses have a double-depth plan and rise three storeys, each with a symmetrical front that includes rusticated pilasters, a coved parapet cornice, and string courses on No. 65.

The outer doorways are distinct, with No. 65 featuring a semicircular-arched doorway, a fanlight, and a six-panel door with narrow margin lights. No. 67 has a rectangular overlight and an attractive shell canopy supported by carved brackets above its six-panel door. Both houses have 6/6-pane sash windows with exposed frames and reveals, with two of these on the ground floor. The basements project towards the road and are faced with squared, coursed rubble, featuring segmental-arched doors. The entrance to No. 65 has a brick surround topped with a carved animal, while No. 67 is flanked by tooled Pennant ashlar piers.

At the rear, No. 65 has a semicircular-arched stair window, and No. 67 features drip moulds over its windows. Inside, the entrance hall leads to a rear dogleg winder stair with slim turned balusters, curtail and column newels, and a wreathed rail that widens toward the bottom. The front rooms are separated by a segmental arch with panelled doors, and there are six-panel doors and shutters throughout.

The houses are complemented by attached wrought-iron railings that enclose paved areas over the basement and the entrance steps. These buildings are noted for being the most complete examples of early 18th-century houses in St Michael's Hill, which contributes to their significant heritage value.
