Description

15, 17, and 19 Portland Street is a terrace of three houses built in the mid-18th century, with possible earlier origins. The buildings are roughcast with a brick party wall stack and a pantile roof, featuring a double-depth plan. Each house has three storeys plus an attic and consists of a one-window range. The shopfronts for Nos. 17 and 19 include left-hand doors leading to flats above, mid to late 19th-century plate-glass windows with thin mullions, a glazed door to No. 17, and a continuous cornice. No. 15 has a similar design but with a right-hand doorway. Nos. 17 and 19 feature 6/6-pane sashes on the first floor and 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor, both in flush frames, while No. 15 has horned 3/3-pane margin-glazed sashes in flush frames. There is a thin raking dormer on No. 17 and a large stack between Nos. 15 and 17. The interior was largely remodelled around 1970 and is reported to have timber cruck-like blades in the rear wall, which were exposed during renovation.
