Description

No. 30, The Mall is an early 19th-century house, now a shop. It is constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, a brick party wall, stacks, and a pantile mansard roof. The house has a double-depth plan and is arranged over three storeys and an attic, with a single-window front. The symmetrical front features a cornice and parapet. A late 19th-century shop front, with a left-hand door, plate-glass window with thin angle mullions and curved corners, and consoles to a blind box, occupies the lower ground floor. A recessed semicircular arch contains a tripartite first-floor window with 9/6-pane and flanking 6/4-pane sashes, and a 4/8-pane sash. A similar window is found on the third floor, with a raking 3-light dormer above.

The interior includes a staircase with an uncut string, turned balusters, and newels with acorn finials. The basement is flagged and features a cast-iron range. The ground floor retains original shop fittings, including arcades to each side of segmental arches supported on panelled pilasters and acanthus capitals.
