Description

This is a late 19th-century butcher’s shop and house located on The Mall, Clifton, Bristol. The building is constructed with glazed brick slips, stucco, and limestone dressings, with the roof hidden. It has a double-depth plan and comprises three storeys and an attic, with a two-window facade.

The building features a fine late 19th-century shop front with pilaster strips extending to a cornice; the section between the pilasters has been removed, and there's a coped attic storey. The shop front incorporates green tiles to a moulded dado, cream panels above and on the shop stall, a splayed entrance to a six-panel door for the house, and a half-glazed shop door featuring a white marble slab and a wide, horned sash window. Fluted consoles support the fascia and a blind box. The second and attic storeys have cambered lintels over horned sashes with margin panes.

The interior retains a well-preserved butcher's shop with tiled walls and a frieze of raised swag design. It includes the original stall, slab, and sash shop window, representing a complete butcher's interior.
