Description
No. 29 Princess Victoria Street is a bank building constructed around 1908, attributed to architects H Dare Bryan or R H Drake. It is built from limestone ashlar and features a double-depth plan in the Edwardian Baroque style. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range.
The symmetrical front displays ground- and first-floor cornices and a blind attic storey. A wide entrance is framed by Tuscan columns supporting a full-width entablature, which is connected by three Gibbsian blocks to the banded ground floor on either side. This ground floor features plate-glass sash windows adorned with carved leaf branches above the lintels and plain blocks above. The entrance includes deeply recessed half-glazed doors.
On the first floor, the central section is recessed under a segmental arch, flanked by Ionic pilasters that feature festoons from their capitals, leading to an entablature and a modillion cornice. The central window is highlighted with an architrave, a large split key, and an open pediment, along with a raised panel above and French windows that are protected by cast-iron railings with intersecting circles. The outer windows also have architraves, tall keys, and festoons.
The central volute key and block divide the parapet, with raised sections on each side that include cornices and panels decorated with swags and wreaths. The interior was rebuilt behind the facade in 1974 and is linked with No. 31. It was possibly designed as part of a symmetrical group, although the left-hand section was not completed.
