Description

Numbers 24, 26, and 28, including part of Number 22, are a pair of attached houses and shops that were originally part of the assembly rooms, built between 1806 and 1809 by Francis Greenway, with interior work by Joseph Kay. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature party wall stacks with a slate mansard roof. They have a double-depth plan and are designed in a classical style, rising three storeys with an attic and a seven-window range.

The late 19th-century shop fronts have panelled jambs with decorative consoles and panelled facias. The upper floors, built in 1809, display a window arrangement of 3:1:2:1, where the wider sections project slightly forward. The left-hand section has a shallow bay, while the right features a thin cornice and a deeper one over the bow. The four-window right-hand section includes windows with raised surrounds, carved capitals, keys, and sill blocks, accommodating plate-glass sashes with margin panes. A 20th-century mansard roof with three dormers is present, and the left side has 6/6-pane sashes on the first floor and 3/3-pane sashes on the second floor. The rear has late 19th-century bay windows with stained-glass leaded lights.

The interior has been extensively remodelled, with many walls removed. Part of the upstairs is included with Number 22, which is known as The Clifton Club. Originally, the left-hand wing of the Assembly Rooms consisted of a pair of houses with rusticated basements, similar to Number 22, and featured doorways in the recessed sections.
