Description

A group of thirteen attached houses, dating from the early 19th century, forming a three-sided court located on Portland Street, Clifton, Bristol, and extending to Gloucester Street and James Place. The houses are constructed of roughcast and black stucco with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and valley roofs. They are arranged in a single-depth plan. Each house is three storeys high, with a basement to those facing Gloucester Street. The Portland Street elevation displays a 1-window range, with two windows per house. The houses are distinguished by plinths, pilaster strips to a frieze, a cornice, and a parapet, along with first-and second-floor sill bands. Nos. 30 and 32 Portland Street have central doorways, while No. 2 Gloucester Street is linked to No. 1 and lacks a doorway; the remaining houses are paired. Each house features raised surrounds with bracketed flat cornices over the doorways, and rectangular overlights with margin panes to the four-panel flush doors. Windows have raised, keyed surrounds with rounded corners, cornices, and sill blocks. Additionally, the windows have horned 2/2-pane sashes with margin panes, and basement grilles are present on the Gloucester Street front. Wide arched vaults in the Gloucester Street houses open into the court. The rear yards are a subsidiary feature. The houses represent a unique arrangement of courtyard housing in Bristol, similar to Carter’s Buildings, and were depicted on Donne's 1821 map.
