Description
A terrace of five houses built around 1780, possibly designed by Thomas Paty. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks and a slate and pantile mansard roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, and are in a late Georgian style. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The front elevation typically has a three-window range, although No. 5 has only two windows. The terrace is articulated by pilasters rising to a cornice and parapet. No. 5 has a later taller ground floor, a lower parapet, and a two-storey porch set back on the right-hand side. The ground floor is rusticated, with semicircular arched openings and recessed doorways on the right-hand side. These doorways have plate-glass fanlights and six-panel doors, with the upper four panels raised. The windows are predominantly 9/9-pane sashes on the first floor and 6/6-pane sashes above in Nos. 2 and 5, with plate glass windows elsewhere; single dormers are present. Timber first-floor balconies are supported by wrought-iron railings; Nos. 3-5 have lattice railings, while Nos. 1 & 2 feature vertical bars with semicircular sections. The interior has not been inspected. Attached to the front are wrought-iron railings enclosing the basement area, topped with urn finials.
