Description

The memorial to the 79th Regiment is a war memorial dating from 1766, originally erected by General Draper. It is constructed from Portland stone with a purple slate roof. The design features a rectangular plinth with angle buttresses, topped by a sarcophagus incorporating scrolled brackets at the corners. An urn with a flame sits atop the sarcophagus. Originally located in the garden of Manilla House, the memorial was moved in 1882 when Manilla Road was built. Its historical significance lies in being an early commemoration of the Indian involvement in the Seven Years War (1759-1762).
