Description
Nos. 4, 6, and 8 Ipswich Road is a terrace of three houses, likely built as one in the early to mid 17th century. The houses were divided into three tenements before 1828 and underwent alterations around 1980. They are one storey high with attics and feature a timber-framed and plastered construction with a Roman pantiled roof. There are two axial chimneys made of red brick; the left chimney is from the 17th century and has a splayed and moulded base leading to an oblong shaft. The houses have slated gabled dormers with small-pane casements. The front roof slope has been rebuilt and includes a wide eaves projection supported by large scrolled brackets. There are various 19th-century small-pane casements, and No. 6 features a three-light 19th-century shop window with a plain cornice and pilasters. The 19th-century entrance doorways are now blocked. The rear has 20th-century lean-to extensions with main entrance doorways. Inside, the unmoulded timber-framing is exposed, and the main chimney was likely designed to heat the parlour on the left and the hall in the center.
