Description
Dove Cottage is a terrace of four cottages located on Norwich Road in Claydon. Originally built as one house in the early 16th century, it has undergone alterations over several periods. The structure is two storeys high and features timber framing that was encased in brick in the late 19th century, which is now painted. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has axial chimneys made of red brick.
Cottages 18 and 20 have late 19th-century sash windows, while cottages 16 and 22 feature late 20th-century casement windows. Each cottage has a 19th-century doorframe with a cambered head, but each has a different entrance door added in the 20th century. No. 16 showcases substantial first-floor members and tension-braced studwork. Cottages 18 and 20 include an open hall with light smoke-blackening, and the roof retains its original coupled-rafter design. No. 22 may either be an original third cell or a 16th or 17th-century extension beyond the hall. A continuous rear outshut was added during the 19th-century conversion into cottages.
